The early Beolink® MCL systems - Breaking down the barriers to total entertainment

MCL 2AV (Audio/Video)

This was a Master Control Link component which allowed for independent volume control, local audio and video sources and control of Bang & Olufsen audio and video components.

This later system allowed you to get the maximum advantage from your music and video system. With one of the later sets in the bedroom, for example, you could use the Beolink 1000 control unit to have direct access to the whole music system. You could play hi-fi music through the speakers in the TV. Or you could play TV sound through separate speakers. The options were almost endless.

MCL2AV was supplied with the following components:

Transceiver, type 2021

Socket panel, type 2020

Power supply, type 2023

The transceiver was the same one as supplied with MCL 2ABLI, with identical dimensions, mounting requirements and electrical characteristics.

The MCL 2AV socket panel was approximately twice as large as the relay box for MCL 2ABLI and required external DC power, supplied either by a small AC adaptor (included) or by the MCL 2P amplifier.

To gain the full benefits of MCL 2AV, it had to be connected either to active loudspeakers or to the optional MCL 2P power amplifier and a pair of passive loudspeakers. If active loudspeakers or MCL 2P amplifier were not used MCL 2AV will function in the identical fashion to MCL 2ABLI.

Master Control Link 2AV provided all of the capabilities of MCL 2ABLI. That is, with the connection of MCL 2AV in a local room, the central room system could be remote controlled via a remote control (such as Beo4 or Beolink 1000). Sound signals were routed through the MCL 2AV which provided a local muting function. This enabled the system to be heard only in the rooms where it was activated, eliminating the need for external speaker switching.

Author Notes:

The bit about MCL2AV being able to be used as a MCL2ABL1 is only true for early MCL2AVs which were fitted with 2 pin DIN sockets. Later ones lost this ability. It would have course have been daft to do this anyway, as the MCL2AV was considerably more expensive than the MCL2ABL1!!
