Bang & Olufsen: "world champion of record players"

The tone arm was introduced in 1958 and included integrated stylus/cartridge SP1. Since 1933 the pickup had developed from being a heavy 'record cutter' with a steel needle to a feather-light micro-magnetic unit with a sapphire stylus. In 1956 Erik Rørbæk Madsen returned from the US with a stereo test record.

However, the record could not be played on any conventional equipment as the special pickup that it required was a manufacturing secret. Madsen therefore had no choice other than to have to develop his own version. The resulting SP1 turned out to be one of the most advanced pickups in audio history. the pickup was combined into the Stereo Gramophone of 1960 which marked the beginning of a new era and whose fundamental principles were to gain the company a reputation as the 'world champion of record players'.

Stereo Gramophone won the iF Design Award in 1967.
