An experience of perfection for the enthusiast who accepts nothing but the very best.
So, developing a sound system to match was a challenge we simply felt we had to take on at Bang & Olufsen – not least because of our previous success with the award-winning Advanced Sound System for Audi A8 and S8.
The result of our latest efforts is a tailor-made system that adds a whole new dimension to the perception of acoustic performance in a sports car.

Powerful – not just under the bonnet
The Bang & Olufsen Sound System for Audi R8 has 12 loudspeakers driven by a combination of 10 channels of amplification and digital signal processing that produces a total amplifier power of 465 watts.
The 12 speakers are all customised for the R8 and comprise a full range center speaker in the dashboard; a powerful subwoofer in a bass reflex cabinet; a tweeter in each of the mirror triangles; a midrange driver and a woofer in each door; and a tweeter and a mid-woofer in both rear panels.
1.9 m³ of space makes quite an acoustic challenge
Ask an acoustic expert and he’ll tell you that the interior of a car is really quite unsuitable for listening to music due to several reasons, e.g. the fact that loudspeakers have to be placed in inappropriate locations, and that there is a substantial amount of intrusive noise that alters your perception of the overall sound quality.
However, by utilising a series of our newest technologies we have turned these challenges into opportunities.
The world’s fastest concert hall
Thanks to our revolutionary 10 channel Digital Signal Processing (DSP) platform, the sound will be adjusted actively in accordance to the speed and overall driving situation.
For instance, a built-in microphone provides input to a complex software algorithm that analyses different frequency bands and adapts them to compensate for any increase in background noise.
Furthermore, the proprietary Bang & Olufsen True Image™ upmixing algorithm will turn the 2-channel stereo signals into astonishing 5.1-channel surround sound, adding even more thrill to the indescribable driving pleasure provided by the R8.
One button is all you need
The Bang & Olufsen Sound System for the R8 is fully integrated with the Audi Infotainment System, so operation is both simple and intuitive.
In fact, because of the computerised sound tuning provided by the system’s DSP, all you have to do yourself is select the basic volume – and enjoy the perfect sound that’s surrounding you.
A treat for the eyes as well
Developing a sound system for a beautiful sports car like the R8 isn’t only about spoiling you with crystal clarity, plenty of power, and an unrivaled authenticity in the reproduction of music.
It’s also about those small details that give your eye a treat.
Which is exactly what our renowned chief designer, David Lewis, set out to do when designing the unique hole structure of the loudspeaker grills and surrounding them with pure anodised aluminium rings.
